I’ve been working on a Future Funds project – a Department of Work and Pension (DWP) funded project – aimed at getting long-term unemployed young people back into employment and/or training.
My role is to provide career coaching to help define career goals, CV writing, interview support and a 6 month coaching programme. All aimed to get young people into jobs and training and off benefits.
This has been both rewarding and challenging at the same time.
Rewarding to meet young people and ask the question – for many to hear it for the first time – “what sort of job do you really want..” and to see them in some cases become animated and enthusiastic in their response. A welcome reaction in the bleak surroundings of the Job Centre.
Challenging finding ways to break through years of preconceived ideas forged by themselves and those around them.
There is a real beauty in helping others see that they really can be whatever they want to be, especially with young people when this realisation hits and the ‘lights’ come on.
